Breaks Frequently

E. Allen 10/16/2019

The toaster itself is fine. However, this handle is VERY FRAGILE! I'm on my sixth replacement.

horrible level. ordering my 5th lever

Oskeewow 10/12/2019

Lever continues to fail very quickly. We like the toaster but the lever issue is very frustrating. I hope that kitchenaid would provide a product that consumers can have the piece of mind that the product will not fail so frequently.

Lever broken, major design flaw

Alicia156 10/5/2019

How can a toaster be designed to have such a small piece of plastic responsible for a long toast lever and not have the expectation that they will break? After having my lever break and seeing the plastic part it is not surprising at all. This is a major design flaw. I have now ordered a Cuisinart toaster from Amazon since the handle on our KitchenAid is clearly defective. We received it as a gift and have no receipt and therefore no recourse. I will be leaving this review on Amazon for the KitchenAid model as well. People should know.

Surprised by poor quality

Former KA customer 8/30/2019

I have a number of KitchenAid appliances and have always been pleased with their durability. I'm surprised, after reading the consistent reviews of this product's obvious design flaw, that KitchenAid charges at all for this part. In fact, they should replace the unit. If I get a new toaster(which my husband encouraged me to do) it won't be a KitchenAid.

Poor design lever

cheeks 7/8/2019

I love KitchenAid products but the lever on this toaster makes me crazy.. I usually order 2 at a time because they break so often, however it is always the same one. This is the 3rd time I'm ordering them.If I didn't love the toaster so much I would buy a new one.

Handle / Lift Levers Break

mk__ 7/2/2019

otherwise good toaster but same issue as everyone else: one lever broke a few months ago, second one just broke as well...doesn't look like the thin plastic can handle the pressure between it and the lever arm - hoping a updated / more durable design is available

Broke the second time I used the toaster!

LauraDov 6/4/2019

Purchased this with high hopes that a Kitchen Aide would last. Wrong! The lever. Role on the second use. A total disappointment!!!

Lever Snapped Off

CS1820 6/2/2019

I purchased this toaster several years ago. I've been happy with it's quality up until now, when the lever snapped off. It is just my husband and me, so the toaster hasn't had heavy use. This part is obviously defective, as many of the other complaints on this page have had the same issue.

Useless Beauty

Rmando 5/22/2019

A few years back, we remodeled our kitchen using all high end Kitchenaid stainless steel appliances, including French door refrigerator, over-the-range microwave/hood, an ultra-quiet dishwasher, and double electric wall ovens. So when we saw this toaster at Costco, we thought it was a beautiful match at a very good price. It worked near-perfectly for almost a year, until the right hand knob unexpectedly broke off. I was able to cobble together a crude fix, using JB Weld epoxy, a sliver of aluminum, and fiberglass mesh, but the "fix" lasted only a few months. Then this morning, the left hand knob snapped in two. So I came here looking for replacement knobs and was surprised to discover that so many other buyers have had the same frustrating and disheartening experience with this item. And so I ask the good folks at Kitchenaid: What good is "beauty," what good is "value," what good is "performance" when a toaster can't toast?

Design flaw

Nickito 5/4/2019

I bought this from Costco which I trust for vetting high quality value products and within the first month the knob broke, I instruct everybody in the house to treat the knobs carefully and finesse like playing Jenga every time you want to make a bagel. The epoxy solution lasted almost 2 years and still hanging on strong, however the second knob broke in a way that cannot use good ole epoxy...the only way to replace the knob I have to remove the cover to access the arms. Well there goes half a Saturday trying to remove the security screws and connections to access the levers and now I'm going to order $20 worth of knobs...hmm how can you design a beautiful quality toaster and finish it off with cheap plastic knobs that are not secured in absolutely any way more than a snap on...then put force and strain on the plastic against springs and metal?? On a side note it's a solid toaster I don't want to add insult to injury but it's was already flawed because the mechanism which locks to toast is faulty which forces the user to push down several times to try to engage it and start toasting. I am a avid Costco customer and I have several Kitchenaid products needless to say disappointed in the build finishing on this product it's set up to fail.

Poor design

Phoneguy 5/1/2019

Like most others we purchased a KTM422CU1 from Costco. We had been pleased with the style and how it toasted, until the levers broke first one then the other. The toaster is virtually unusable. We also purchased the same model for our Son and his Wife. Theirs broke as well. I'm very disappointed. Ours had been broken for several months now and I was searching for replacement parts. Now I'm not sure what to do.

Lift lever Broke Again!

joe609 4/26/2019

What can I say? The lift levers just don't last! Poorly designed. Have to use a butter knife to lower the levers. Been through three pairs so far. Just not happy with the product at all.

Poor Design by Kitchenaid

Josaboy 4/22/2019

This is the third time I had to replace both Levers on my toaster. It is a poor design for this lever. First of all it is constructed of plastic and the plastic get soft when heated due to the heat of the toaster. After only a few uses, the lever at the plastic end which connects to the metal lever eventually breaks. It will continue breaking and the replacement cost is $7 per lever times 2 levers. That's $14 bucks each time. I could have invested in a better toaster with all the money I've spent. Kitchenaid should really be giving these at no cost.

This is a design defect.

Geno1 4/20/2019

Flimsy plastic knobs that break easily. And at an outrageous 6.99 for a tiny piece of plastic (that will break again soon) representing over 10% of the price of the whole toaster. It's also a outrageous rip off. They should be sending these for free to anyone that owns this toaster.

whats up with these knobs??

toaster poster 3/12/2019

I'll tell you whats up with these knobs. Its surprisingly hard to push down the toasting lever and, initially, i thought "Well thats good, It'll wear in over time and not be all flimsy". However you combine that with these very thin plastic handles and its a recipe for obsoletion. Its unfortunate because i love the toaster and i am tempted to give it two stars for the rest of the design but what good does an awesome toaster do you with no handles? Kitchenaid: could you maybe make these out of metal instead??? If not you should definitely be replacing these for free. Its distressing that my small children see me using a butter knife etc to push down the levers and are now imitating me and sticking metal utensils into a toaster.....

Knobs Broke Off

Pete494 3/9/2019

I have a Model KMT422CU1. Both knobs also broke off, first the left and then the right. Should have been metal not thin plastic. Design defect. Knobs should be provided free.

1 broke off then the other a month later

Rosstaman 3/3/2019

I can't remember exactly how old this toaster is, but I'm thinking we bought it in 2015/16, the classic common thread to these reviews are very similar, we used the left side the most as it was up against a tile wall, the left lever broke off... then all we had was the right side & now it broke this weekend. For now, i have to try & use a small needle nose pliers to engage the toaster to the on position... i guess I'm looking on amazon for a new toaster.

Terrible engineering/Junk

toppdawg 2/25/2019

We have a 4-slice toaster (KMT4115CU). Came here looking for parts to repair a couple of toaster handles ...they are not available anywhere else that I can find. Like other reviews, I broke the left handle abot 5 mo. ago and last week my normally very careful wife broke the right handle. Exasperating! My wife and I are retired and the only ones to use this toaster...mostly her. Judging by other reviews, this toaster is not made for daily use...the handles truly have a design flaw and the materials used are a bad idea and do not merit daily use. Then, I noticed that the discussed part (2 pieces) costs close to $20...really? For the trouble I been through alone, I should get the replacement part free...but unless you have changed the design and materials used...don't bother...sending new parts of the same make merely implies that we, the customer, are at fault for this poorly designed/made part. Please ask the Robot sending those annoying "Review Responses" not to bother responding to this...This whole ordeal smacks of poor engineering and deceit. My wife has a Kitchen Aid Mixer along with all the accessories and I assumed the toaster I purchased was of the same quality...not so. I hope the mixer lasts longer. In short, either make quality products or don't but do not pass off quality for something else....over-deliver is the American way.

Poor engineering from a company known for quality

Burdman25 2/24/2019

Why would anyone pair a flimsy, poorly fitting plastic handle with an otherwise very good toaster? We've gone through 7 of these handles. May as well buy another toaster given the high failure rate of this component. The ratings below are due to this component. A chain is only as good as its weakest link.

Design flaw

saltnpepper 2/19/2019

Came here looking for parts to fix a design flaw. Broken left handle like the other reviews. My wife is the only one that makes toast and she weighs 100lbs. I doubt that she is abusing the toaster but I'll keep my eye on her.

Lift levers for 4-slice toasters are terrible

AJ242 2/3/2019

We have a 4-slice toaster (KMT4115ER). After 1year the left lever handle broke, and then the right one broke a few months later. Based on our experience and what I am reading from others with similar experience, obviously a faulty design. This is a part that is intended for daily use, and should have been designed or made of materials sufficient to accept the intended use. Instead, every year or so you will have to spend near $20 (for 2 w/shipping) for a $90 item.

Lever breaks easily

Geo54 5/20/2018

I bought a KitchenAid 4 piece toaster model number KMT422CU1 approximately 2 years ago. The first lever broke off after 5 months and now the second lever broke off a 18 months later. I tried to fix this issue, but when I turned the toaster over to take it apart the screws were slotted as if to use a straight screw driver with the middle solid and the sides slotted where you need a special tool to take it apart. Does anybody know what tool I need and where I could purchase one ?
